ELEMENTS OF AN EFFECTIVE AD
When a prospect is looking at your ad, they have to in 3-5 seconds know what you are advertising (i.e. your headline or picture is CRITICAL). & what is your offer. The ad has GOT TO BE CLEAN -- too much information overwhelmes the prospect. Attract your reader’s attention with an exciting graphic and / or a gripping headline, make it clear what your offer is and what you want them to do after reading your ad.
COMPELLING HEADLINE
Your headline is the most important part of all the technical aspects of your ad. 80% of the success of the headline can be attributed to its headline. A powerful headline is either, (1) benefit driven, (2) news oriented, (3) curiosity driven, or (4) how-to oriented.
Here are some examples:
Benefit Driven Example: “You Too Can Have a Hour-Glass Figure Without Dieting”
News Oriented Example: “Amazing New Formula Eases Arthritis Pain”
Curiosity Driven: “Are You Making These Deadly Home-Repair Mistakes?”
How-to Oriented: “How to Get a Good Night Sleep.... Night after Night."
Spend some time brain storming with other people to develop at least 20 variations of your headline before you select the one you’ll use. Readers scan headlines to see if they want to read further.
GRAPHICS
Graphic(s) are a great way to grab attention. But make sure you have room to tell you story. Even though a picture is worth a thousand words, it can sometimes create confusion as a picture can be interpreted a thousand ways. If possible, include someone in your graphic from the target market you’re trying to reach, and even better if they are using your product or service.
IRRESITABLE OFFER
Strong offers on products or services are what motivates consumers to respond. One of the secrets to constructing an irresistible offer is to add valuable bonuses and extend risk-free, easy-to-pay terms. Make it easy for them to do business with you!
CALL TO ACTION
Phrases such as, “call now”, “come in today”, “sign up right now”, "visit our website to receive your free how-to guide" trigger emotional response mechanisms that get your prospect to take action on an offer. Make your call-to-action explicit and clear, so your prospect knows exactly what to do.
